Tree work across Terre Haute

Terre Haute has about 58,000 residents spread over several township areas: Honey Creek on the south side is the biggest at roughly 17,000, Lost Creek to the east holds about 11,000, and Otter Creek and North Terre Haute together add around 13,500. Older streets near downtown and ISU carry the oldest silver maples, oaks and sycamores, and those are the trees that end up on roofs.

The city has been named a Tree City USA for 28 years, so street trees are taken seriously. The flip side is that anything near the curb is probably city business, not just yours.

What the city expects

Terre Haute employs an Urban Forester who is a Certified Arborist, and its Tree Ordinance requires a permit to plant, prune, treat or remove a tree in the right of way. The permit costs $25 and comes from Engineering at 17 Harding Ave, and the contractor has to be registered with the city.

For a high-risk or dead parkway tree, the city may take it down at no cost, then plant a replacement under its Legacy Tree Replacement Program, which has run since 2013. Request it by calling 311. The seven-member Tree Advisory Board meets quarterly at City Hall.

Common jobs here

Dead ash is the top call. Emerald ash borer was first found in Vigo County on February 19, 2013, and a lot of the ash that was infested then is still standing and brittle. The June 29, 2023 derecho also knocked trees onto houses and across Ohio Blvd, and gusts of an estimated 70 mph hit again in August 2026.

Typical tree removal estimates for the city run from about $185 to $735 and a single stump about $79 to $144.
